A Netflix Review: Rain Man

Amazing 80s Hair

I'll be honest. I'm not a Tom Cruise fan. I had to study Eyes Wide Shut during my degree and that truly weirded me out. Apart from An Interview With a Vampire and this film, I can leave him. In Rain Man he truly shines as playing a completely ignorant yuppie who finds himself with an autistic brother, played by Dustin Hoffman. Although you quickly forget he's Dustin Hoffman, as he plays autistic Ray both convincingly and authentically.

Since I've been working in education, I myself have been further educated on special educational needs, especially regarding those on the Autistic Spectrum Disorder. You can read more about that here. We all have our quirks, but for those with ASD this is heightened; a lighthearted example would be Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory. This film displays the misconception that those with autism all have exceptional talents, however this is Hollywood we're talking about. But ultimately it can be credited with raising awareness of the disorder. A genuinely touching film, which I do not say lightly.

Music Monday

A female centered Music Monday this week. There was a period in my teens when I listened almost exclusively to male singers: The Strokes, Kings of Leon, The Killers. Then I had a girl group phase which changed all that: The Ikettes, Le Tigre and of course Destiny's Child. So this is a celebration of those artists.

Le Tigre-Deceptacon
This was a firm favourite in my teens with some of my close friends. Perfect for kitchen dancing.

The Ikettes-I'm Blue
This is-and I sound corny-such a groover. Twist on those heels baby.

Destiny's Child-Bootylicious
Okay so I was obsessed with this song and video. I mean dip dyed hair! Fringing! Celebrating curves! Get up and twerk to this jam.

A Netflix Review: Heathers

Netflix is very good and I do not make these comments lightly. It streams quickly on my clunky laptop, has a decent (quickly growing) library and it makes watching films and tv shows almost too fast. I find myself watching films that I even have on DVD. If that is not the epitome of laziness on my part then I don't know what is, but it speaks volumes for Netflix's easy access. FYI, I am not affiliated with Netflix in any way. I just love me some films.

Anyway. I rewatched Heathers which was recently added. Aesthetically and linguistically, I just love it. If you're a fan of 'cult' films then you should definitely check this out. I screencapped it for the first reason-warning-this was the 80s, so the hair is big. This is pre-Clueless, and MUCH more raunchy. Plus it contains the lovely Winona Ryder as the gloriously sarcastic Veronica.

This is much more than your average chick flick or High School movie. It has a dark, twisted edge and subverts your expectations. Its dialogue is choke-on-your-Diet-Coke sharp.

On a final note, why do I note sleep like this?

Music Monday

*Radio Presenter Voice* Welcome back to Music Monday, where I share some of my favourites, both new and old!

Avicii vs Nicky Romero-I Could Be The One
You have most likely heard this, but I picked it because I love when a music video tells a story. It's much better than all this gyrating around business. I cannot wait to hear this out when I can dance like this fine woman.

Jake Troth-Material Things
If you like Vampire Weekend, you will enjoy this. I really like this little song and video. I found this because Jake Troth features on the latest Big Boi single which you can find here

Helen Shapiro-You Don't Know
Do you ever wish you had experienced another decade? 1960s for me please. This is a beautiful song full of longing and heartbreak.

If you have a song you can't get out of your head, please share it below!

End of Hiatus and a New Look

I have missed doing this blog, so thanks to my wee sis Jessica it has been revamped. From this time forward I will endeavor to post frequently. I make excuses about time but really, if I have time to watch copious amounts of Gossip Girl (thank you Netflix), then I have time to blog. So, as the extremely 90s phrase goes, watch this space.
